My Guest book got full and had to be split so I broke it down to yearly pages so it would be easier to look things up.

Comments:I used to go by a large sign advertising 199th Infantry to and from my base camp 5/2 Artillery (Dusters, Quads, Searchlights)near the ammo dump you speak of, was wondering if you went by my old base camp? Also, when you went to Cu Chi did you see the old army base there or were the pics of the tunnels from the village area? Thanks.

Comments:Hello Henry, I was stationed in Nui Dat from Aug. 67 and I had to go back to Long Bihn overnite because my wife at that time was not getting my checks. While there that night some VC broke the perimeter,if I remeber it right, with satchels on their backs and blew up the Ammo Dump. I'm trying to get VA Benefits and they need a date. I remember it as been in Oct. or Nov. but I could be way off, Since you were there, maybe you can help refresh my memory? Much appreciated, brother.

Comments:I was in Saigon, in July 1970 as a united states navy Seabee working on the fountain in Cholon. We installed colored lights and all sorts of fountain heads to make a wonderful gift to the city from the united states government. It is really a wonderful sight to me to see that the fountain is still in place this many years later. I am now 60years and then I was only 22. You brought a smile to my face when i saw the fountain with the Dragon.

Comments:As I had written you earlier, but letter unfinished due to space allowance, I loved the country. My first outpost was outside Ton Son Nhut where I was plugging a hole overrun by VC during Tet, this was August 68, chopper had to bring us in (searchlight crew and radar) and at night it was pitch black though I was outfront of 105mm arty and 4.2 mortars on a bunker line near what they called Korean Road. I envied the air force guys as some times I would drive our jeep into the air base and see air conditioned barracks and showers while we lived in ditches and bunkers loaded with ground water, flies and rats;it was too much so I stayed away, then I moved to Phu Cuong bridge where I stayed for 8-9 months till I extended for base camp outside Long Binh-5/2 Artillery (twin 40mm, quad 50 cal, searchlights) near the 199th light infantry. I was told we were near the outskirts of the ammo dump acting as a buffer. When I extended for base camp, I was assigned to Headquarters, lived in three different hooches as they moved me from job to job killing time, became a courier, built a small pool (dug a hole with bulldozer, lined it with rubber formerly used to land helocopters, got a pump for circulation, but due to it being on the outskirts, ie. perimeter road where the mobile 155's, dusters, vulcans drove, this "pool" loaded with dust and I was supposed to clean it), became sargent of guard, also in charge of hooch at rear of compound where rat killers and ladies who washed our clothes came in. Had three male and one female interpreter under me who would check the men and women coming on our base. Another duty they gave me was to haul water in tanker to an orphanage which was such a revelation. The Vietnamese nuns would grab me, take me to a room with cribs full of American/Vietnamese babies who looked like they were from Kansas, the nuns would say, "Please you take, look just like you, you take." It broke my heart, and I could foresee the hard times these kids would face after we left, and anything American would be hated.

Comments:Dear Henry, your Web Site is great. !!!! I do live here in Saigon since 25 years. The last two years I collected a lot of photos of Old Saigon mainly postcards and a french book with litographs but also some from the Internet and your site as well. With these I went to the same locations of today, tried to manage the same view position and I took nowadays photos. These I processed and framed and aranged them stiched side by side old / new as one photo. Up to today I do have already more than 50 pictures which I placed as a album in my Internet Gallery. Click the HP link and the first two position are these pictures. Click on the thumbnail to open the album and there to enlarge the pictures. Please let me know on your impression of this kind of processing. Best regards from Saigon Yours George

I remember being at TSN when the ammo dump at Long Binh was hit in 1967; it was about 9pm and I thought maybe an F4 had gone down, loaded with munitions. I remember being amazed at the fireworks show! I loved Vietnam and the people. I didn't get to see much of the country while I was there. I wish I could return but probably will not have the chance to do so. Fortunately, I worked with many Vietnamese for several years before I retired from the printing profession. Comments:Enjoyed looking your work over. I was stationed in Long Bien from April 1967 until January 1968. Got to see Bob Hope when he came over in December of 1967. I was with the 19th D.P.U., which at the time I was there, was on the south side of the base. I sure don't remember any swimming pool in the area, but do remember going out the front gate on tne north end and catching a Lumbretta and going in to Ben Hoa. Even spent a few over-nighters there. I've been trying to find whatever happened to my unit. We were situated right nest to the 56th D.P.U., but I'm sure at sometime or other we were both swallowed up by someone else. Our unit only had 94 men in it, and this included the 4 officers. Our highest ranking officer was a Major. Our work was all classified, and we worked with computers, and they had to be cooled, so we worked out of air conditioned trailers. I think, if memory serves me right, that we had 6 interlocked trailers, but it could have been 8. We went 24 hours a day

Comments:Hi - When I don't have anything to do here at my part time job I look up Long Binh. Was there from June 1967 - May 1968 at the 160th HHD Signal Group. Don't remember the brigade number and I can't figure out where we were exactly on base. Anyway, I went back in 1985 when it was "illegal" to go to VN. Passed by Long Binh then and it was just a barren field with the General Hq buildings in the background. I went back again in 2005 and the place was all built up. Had no idea where anything was. Went to Bien Hoa and the only structure I recalled was the watertown. It was very surreal to me. Actually, kind of sad to think how long along I had been there. Had a fantastic trip though. Spent 7 weeks in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Sailed the Mekong river for eight days, spent time in Phnom Penh, travelled by pickup truck to Laos, flew to Hanoi, took the train to Hue and then had a guide and driver as we crisscossed our way back to Saigon. Was going to go back again this winter and "l

While out on guard duty things got ugly. We recieved sniper fire and could not shoot back. I caught hell from this captain for setting off a white phosphorous flair. This went on for almost 2 hours. I am accidently stumbling in to your web site a couple of days ago , interestingly I've been looking for the street named Adran for some personel reasons and thank you for your photo postcard I found where it is and what is look like now. For your information Adran now is HO TUNG MAU , that the street starting where Mac Thi Buoi ending , Ho Tung Mau is the street leading from behind Tong Nha Ngan Kho or Kho bac Nha nuoc on Nguyen Hue to the waterfront on Quai de Belgique or Ben Chuong Duong where the Cau Mong to Khanh Hoi is ,you will passed the Old US Embassy on Ham Nghi on the way to the waterfront by this route . Your Adran photo postcard was taken somewheres near old US Embassy on Ham Nghi to Adran street, the building you see on the old postcard is now NHU LAN building , famous for French sandwitches and ask to why this street named was Adran the only explanation is the wooden church ,the first one in Saigon was here before its moved to its present location Sa

Comments:Hello Henry, Well, I think I've gone through your whole site! Thank you very much for sharing. As a girl I lived with my family in Quin Yon, Nha Trang and Saigon. We left in 1967 just before Tet. My father worked for RMK, a construction firm you probably recognize. We lived in Vietnam when no one back home had ever heard of it. lol I'd like to go back and take my kids who are in their 30's. I have friends there in Saigon that I have known for 40 years. They will help me find a place to stay. I'm a teacher who subs for our local schools systems. I have thought about teaching in VN but might be too old! lol Still, your pictures make me "homesick." We lived in Gia Dinh in Saigon the last time. Would love to see if our home is still there. I'm sure I won't be able to recognize a lot. Just your pictures of the market in Saigon looks so small. Anyway, nice to meet you and let me know if you're going back. :) Deborah

Comments: I have always wanted to go back, even when I was there, I knew I should return. I loved the people and understood why they wanted us out and why at various times someone tried to kill me. I go along with the kids, and especially the families of Vietnames soldiers on the bridge separating phu loi and Cu Chi known as the Phu Cuong Bridge. A book was written about our experience there called Where the Rivers Run Backwards by William E. Merritt about life from Ft. Leonard Wood to the explosion which killed and wounded a few of us, I had 18 months to go to get the early out as I had enlisted for three years in the Artillery and eventually went to 5/2 Arty (automatic weapons self propelled, AKA, Quads, Dusters, Searchlights). Our main base was at one end of Long Binh, and for part of my tour I was a courier and would travel to Long Binh to pick up top secret radio traffic and other intelligence. It would take about an hour one way. When I returned from 2nd Field Force w/ the messages for HQ, 5/2 Arty, we would travel toward a village possibly known as Tam Hiep, but can't remember too well, and then get off at a dirt road, plain ol' flour like dust for a couple of miles, then turn toward base camp and along a railroad track for a while, I think, past 197th light infantry, possibly, finally to the outskirts of a huge ammo dump, I believe, which we guarded w/dusters, quads, vulcans, searchlights. I would guard the gate (my second year) at the rear of the compound facing the village the name of which I cannot remember and through which the ratkillers, barbers, washing women and girls, tranlators would go and I was in charge of keeping an eye on things as guys would try to climb the wire to get to the village for a good time. One even shot himself when I wouldn't let him climb over the wire by leaning on his m-16 and push/pull the trigger, never found out what happened to him, at least what I can remember of the incident, and it's like he didn't even exist, but I knew him pretty well which is why he tried to get by me.

The Google photos sure look different. Time does that I guess. I had the honor of being the last person to cross the Perfume River Bridge before it met its' demise. Had driven thru the Citadel Gates bringing troopers in from the Air field next to the ARVN Army Comound. Thought it was strange that the white mice aka..... Vietnam Police were not present on the bridge as usual. Again, many thanks for what you have done. I'm sure many guys appreciate your efforts....Chuck

I always thought that Viet Nam would be a nice place to live if it were modernized with air-conditioned buildings. I would like to see how the place looks after all these years, in photos, and films, but I wouldn't travel there. Thanks for this website, and the memories it gave me.

I can understand that many of you do not have pleasant memories of Viet Nam and it is quite understandable. But there are many people out there who lived in Viet Nam as military, diplomatic, missionary and business dependents who lived, went to school there and loved it and I am one of them. My dad was stationed in Saigon, Sgt Maj. Of MAAG (1960 or thereabouts) and my mother, sister and I joined him. We lived above the PX and commissary on Phan Dinh Phung street until my dad retired in 1963 and went to work for USOM (today USAID). My family was evacuated in 1965. I returned to Viet Nam in 1968-1969 as a GI and was stationed at Long Binh with the 12th CAG. Missed Tet by about a week. Again returned to Viet Nam in 1973 while on my way to Phnom Penh for an assignment and was evaluated from there just before the countr

Comments:Served at TCHill from late 66 to 67 (end of 2 year draftee time). 7th Trans HHD. Clerk; typed convoy manifests from Saigon to destination points. Would go back under the right circumstances. Wonder about the route to BienHoa, especially the market place and the river front. Seems there was a town at the turn west to Bien Hoa; can't remember its name. I left when the big HQ was just being started; the hill had just been cleared and graded.

Comments:Henry, I thoroughly enjoyed browsing your site. I was in Nha Trang from Jun '68 until Nov '69, as a Morse Code Operator with Special Forces at the SFOB. Because SF was 300% overstrenght and MP's critically short, I was reassigned to the 615th MP Co, Long Binh until my extension ended in Jan '70. I have fond memories of my time in Vietnam, love the people and have always had a desire to return! Maybe some day! Take care, SGM T

I was in the 20th Preventive Medecine Unit attached to the 9th Lab (?). One of the pictures you have is my computer screen saver. Our hootches are just barely shown in your picture of the 20th Med-Evac hospital. They were located in the far upper right hand edge of the photo. I have had very little luck in finding any information about the 20th PMU. Thanks, again. Calvin

My unit 522nd Med Det, Veterinary HQ. was in the decomissioned First Aid Bldg and across from the Transportation Battalion PX and near the above-ground swimming pool. We had an elevated water tower nest to the back of our bldg. I would be interested in hearing whether you remember any of this even remotely. Sincerely, Tony Anderson

I fell in love while in Japan so went back there married the girl and got a Job with the Navy as a civilian and remained in Japan until 2005. Now we (that same Japanese girl) live in Deltona Florida happily retired. While working for the Navy we set up a communications site in Thailand every year for an exercise. In 2002 I took a few days leave from the exercise and went back to Saigon. I had worked at Phu Lam Signal 63 until Dec 64. I enjoyed my return trip but did was not there long enough to see much more than down town Saigon and a visit to Phu Lam. I enjoyed your site. I may visit VN and Thailand again next year. Saw the flag lowered for the last time and for me, it was kind of sad, but then it was on to Saigon and MACV. I was assigned fired to the Area Communications Company and worked in Russell Major Relay and when it closed, to the Command Communications Company and worked in the USARV Commcenter. Anybody remember the building Russell was in, I can find our barrachs, but not the Relay on your map. I seen a lot of closings going on in RVN, I left I think on the 20th of March, 1973. It was time for my second tour in Bangkok. I will keep right on coming back to your site, thought it was time to say thank you for the memories.

Comments:Excellent site! I originally discovered the Google map while logged on to a scale model site called HyperScale. Someone had posted the Long Binh image and so I panned across the screen. Much to my amazemnet, I think that I have located my old stomping grounds, now appears to be overgrown. It is located NE of what was the USARV headquarter across the stream There is a purple cast from the shadows in the area that I believe where our tents were located. I was with the HHC, 36th Signal Battalion at Camp Gerry. The bulk of our unit arrived just after Thanksgiving 1966. We had crossed the Pacific on the Geiger anchoing off Vung Tau. Then we boarded landing creaft (LCM-6?) to the shore and on to th airfield. We flew on USAF C-123s to Bien Hoa and then cattle car to Camp Gerry. The ammo dump you have mentioned blew up one night in February 1967 while I was on duty by myself in our communications center. Needless to say, the whole area was under alert. But the VC sappers had already slipped

I have a picture I took from the window of the horse/rider statue at the driving circle stop in Siagon July/Aug of 68. I was training Sp4 Ron Speight on that run as I was taking the Dispacther job over from Sp 5 Robinson who was rotating out. I ended up with both the Bien Hoa and Siagon after the Siagon CPO van overturned killing several workers, 1 of them the lady Kim from my barracks. Woody Woodward was also in that barrack. Then the Bien Hoa driver killed a civilian pedestrian while showing me that route.

Comments:It's amazing that you had so many pictures about VN to post on your website. You also had remarks in detail about each picture. Some of your pictures touched me so deep, especially pictures about Bien Hoa. I was a South VN Army officer. I was born in Bien Hoa. My home was a mile or so from BienHoa market. In my young age, I went to Nguyen Du elementary school. I recall the time I was in some of the classrooms that showed in your picture. It was almost 50 years ago. I went to war from 1971 to 1975, stationed in Moc Hoa, Kien Tuong. After the war I went straight to concentration camp for 5 years, escaped to USA in 1980. There was not a single picture of my life or VN that I could cary with me. There were only bitter memories in my mind. We lost the war. So many people had sacrified or lost their lives during the war for nothing. I haven't had a chance to go back to visit. Your website is very informative and touching. Good job, Henry.

Was with 41st Engineer Company (PC) which built the POL unloading point, hung the fence fabric around the Saigon Docks and did a lot of other engineering work there. Spent six months driving truck for them all over the area and south. Then was in Delta 62nd Engineers driving 5 ton and 10 ton trucks hauling supplies from the RMKBRJ yard down to the area around Bien Luc in the delta. Was fun seeing your pictures. When they brought in the lawn mowers I knew it was time to leave.

Comments:Henry I came across your website while searching for information on Bien Hoa and Long Binh. I am a Vietnamese girl who was born in VN, but moved to the US when I was 10 years old. Within the last 21 years, I have gone back 3 times, and in a few weeks, I will be back once again. This time, I am bring my non-Vietnamese husband. I know it will be an absolutely amazign time for him. Thank you so much for posting all of these pictures. This is a great way for me to "prepare" my husband for what is yet to come when he sees my "home". When I lived in VN, my house was walking distance from Long Binh. In fact, my grandparents had farms in Long Binh. I lived at their farm on several occasions. I remember that it was just a beautiful place. The last few times I went back, all the beaufiful vegetation and open land were gone. I was very saddened by that. Thanks again for sharing your memories. I am very excited about our trip scheduled for July 7th, 2007. Thu Trang Edstrom (Nguyen)

Had a hooch buddy named Ben Bowman I've tried to find for years. Maybe he'll see this. Although most of my war was perimeter guard and a few stay mortars and rockets, I was glad to help in any way I could with records.

Comments:My original post was January 2, 2007. Since then I have information about the 66th Engr. Co. (Topo)(Corps) location. Company Headquarters was about "800 meters northeast of II Field Force, Vietnam, HQ, on Route 316 (1A) at Gate 6". This info was taken from a document carried by Survey Platoon members regarding support of Surveyors by other units while we were in the field. I now also have an aerial photo of our unit location but no way to scan and email as yet.

My mistress is also Vietnam.I served 9/68-9/69 with MACV and then with an intel unit attached to 5th SFGA. I made 3 return trips back in 1994, 1995, and 1996 and they are chronicled in the website above. Hope to make another trip in a couple of years. I would like your permission to link to your site as I get vets asking me about travel info and my last trip was 11 years ago and you would be able to advise vets about current travel. Also, I spent my first days in Vietnam in 1968 at the Replacement Depo in Long Binh. I couldn't seem to find that on your Long Binh map. Thanks, Greg Taylor

Comments:Hi Henry,I served at Long Binh from Nov.22nd 1968 to Nov.21st 1969.I served in the 61st (H.E.M.)heavy equipment maintenance company,79th maintenance battalion,1st Logistical command.I tried to locate my company area but to no avail from your photos and maps of Long Binh.We were about 1,000 yards due east of the main PX and about the same,1,000 yards just due north of the amphitheatre where Bob Hope performed at Christmas. We had a mess hall in our company area with the orderly room.arms room, dayroom, and then 7 rows of hootches and 6 hootches in each row and then our club was at the south end of our company area.We had a motor pool just northeast of our company area about a 1/4 mile away and another motor pool to the east of us down a paved road about 1 1/2 miles to 2 miles from the co. area. There are buddies I've never been able to contact like Larry Troxtel,Smitty and my closest buddy,Elton Spurgeon passed away March 20th 2003.I was finally able to contact his wife via information.Spur

Not sure what you mean by a "thing". I have a number of friends in Vietnam who are a great help to me. I treasure each one of them and there is never anything improper.

Comments:II Field Force 1969-70. Having trouble recognizing location of anything I can remember, including the IIFFV pool, and the original II FFV HQ on the satellite photo. Area in front of II FFV WAS a field with some VN villages, which I recently saw depicted in "Vietnam" magazine showing Tet '68 action. I have some photos you may be able to use.

Comments:I was a Radio Teletype Operator with TMA-MACV (507th Transportation GP)at Da-Nang in 1966 and in 1967 was sent to the TMA DTO at PHU-BAI as Comm Chief (no promotion) untill August. I knew many of the fellows with TMA throughout Vietman in Commo. Chester Presnel and Tim Manders to name two. Tim was in the radio shack a Headquarters at Saigon, I think the address was Nr. 1 Trin Man Tho on the river. I went with the CO on trips to check our DTO's in Hue (see Joel Packman's site--was there at the same time & knew Packman) and Khe San. I really liked the people and the county. I made some good Vietnamese friends, good times as well as the Hell. I have never really discussed Vietnam with anyone, so I have lost many memories. Please feel free to email me.

Comments:I was in Vietnam 1966-67. I left country first of October 1967 after having extended my tour for an early out. I was with the 66th Engineer Co (TOPO) with HQ at Long Bien. Most of my tour wasw TDY as I was a surveyor. We worked all over the southern part of the country. I see a former 66th member in your guest book and plan to email him. After so many years, I want to know what happened to our outfit and those I knew. Thanks for a great site.
