I have some shots of Saigon and Vung Tau taken in '69; I have been relocating places where I took each one and photograph a modern equivalent Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thanks. Bruce. |

Didn't see much that I found interesting to look at back then (although I took a lot of pictures) and it would seem even more foreign to me now. Looks like a lot of lives and money wasted. Gee .kind of like today! E mail if you would like more memories. I have a Sony reel to reel tape recorder I bought at the main PX and it still works just fine! Went to Sydney for R&R. Hope you will go there again and post more wonderful pictures like these here. |

| Comments: | 1st Logistical Command, Long Binh Army Depot Security Guard Company, March 1969 - March 1970. Great site - I have not had a chance to return to Long Binh, but I think it could be an interesting experience. I did not get off of the post very often, but I did stay at the Hotel Mai Lon or something like that twice. Our hootchs were just below the USARV Hqs helipad -used to go to the px snack bar - strawberry sundaes and the occasional hamburger. |

I am a retired soldier and a Vietnam Veteran. I currently work for the Department of Defense as my second career.I served in Vietnam from 69-70 and 70-71. I served the first tour with the 19th Maintenance Company, 185th Maintenance Battalion. The second tour I served with the 984th Engineer Company Land Clearing(Rome Plows), 62nd Engineer Battalion and was stationed out of Long Binh both tours. I had a Vietnamese girlfriend back then witnessed and experienced both joy and tradegy as very young man. I cannot even remember her last name but I still have pictures of us both. So I appreciate your pictures and diary of your trip to Vietnam. I am currently stationed in Korea with my Wife (she is Not Korean)and we may go to visit Vietnam again. Thanks for all you have done and I salute you as a former soldier and comrade in arms. |

HHC, 160th Signal Group,1st Signal Brigade and we had the MARS unit attached to us. Was a Guideon Barrer when Creighton Abrams took over from Westmoreland. Would love to go back to see what it is like. Miss Sen was our Personnel Officer's Secretary. |

I made regular trips to Long Binh carrying documents to the USARV headquaters. I was in VN from April 69 to March 70. I returned to VN (after 38 years) in Aug. 2008 with a small delegation from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C. I loved the 10-day trip back!! |

| Comments: | Hi Henry,
Enjoyed your pix. I have returned several times to VN, mostly in the north.
Last trip was February 2010 which included Tet. What an amazing holiday!
As you indicate, it is easy to make friends in VN - and keep them.
My wife has taken to VN cooking, so I get frequent reminders of the place as we eat.
I will return next year, I'm sure.
Take care,
Phil |

We went back to Vietnam in March, 2010 for a 3 weeks visit. Both of us worked at USARV Headquarters - Inspector General.
While we were in SGN we went Long Binh but can't find anything resemble your HQ pictures. It is nothing but a large industrial park with many companies.
Enjoyed to see pictures and read your page.
PS - I worked in Long Binh from 1968 through 1972 and Joe was at Long Binh from 1970-1971.
Thanks for taking time to keep up with this site. |

| Comments: | I was company clerk at HHD, 71st Trans Battalion from July 69 to July 70. I was drafted a month after our daughter was born. Every now and then I will read an article that has the view that the war really had a purpose and that it slowed down the spread of communism. I do envy our troops coming back from the middle east who are treated as heros. While I was no hero, I did do my job and did it well. I guess the fact that I went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison for my MBA after I got home would have something to do with how I was treated. |

I so much want to go back for a vistt o my company area and the main deopt and property disposal and the lumber yard or 208 as it was called. I was an Mp there in1970. If I can some how find the money to go and take my wife I will go if for no other reason than to get closer. I guess I feel like most Nam vets it was a good cause but a waste because we were not allowed to win. because of the bleeding hearts and the press. |

| Comments: | Henry, enjoyed you website and pics very much. Strangely, Vietnam holds a special place in my heart and I would love to return to see it someday, but I am 66 years old now and will not likely have the opportunity to go there again in this life. I was stationed at Bien Hoa in 1964 and was in the US Air Force. In fact, I was there for the first mortar attack on an American base 1 Nov 64. I enjoyed the pics of Bien Hoa town but much has changed. The old theatre was similar to what I remembered. There was club on the base called the Jupiter Club and bus loads of gals would come up from Saigon each night. I became very good friends with a girl name Lethi Ming who was one of the girls and she lived on Phan Din Phoung (spelling?) in Saigon. She had a very young sister who came with her as well to the club. I visited her house many times and I am sure the man and young child there was Ming's husband and child but she always told me her husband had been a ARVN officer who had been kill |

The bunker was easily locatable because of the non-operations electric power lines built by the French which ran along the side of the large two door bunker which was about 12 feet tall. Strange the US Army never figured it out that those towers made it a sure and perfect line of sight to fire their rockets in on my bunker and hit the ammo pads which rocked our ass's much to often. Us radio operators did the coordination for the roving jeep patrols to escort the ammo truck convoys to the various pads to load ammo and at night we directed the mortar illiminations clearance from Ben Hoe Artillery call sign. The perimeter was 9 miles around and was breached on TET 68 by 200 VC from I believe the 247th Regiment or some number close to that. Our area was directly north of USARV HQ. and was under the Helo flight path for the choppers approaching and departing the USARV HQ. My work area was a communications trailer just about the same distance from USARV HQ as our BN HQ and was right next to Personnel Center just east of USARV HQ. I have pictures of the area if you are interested.
From the pictures of the area now the trees and greenery are there but it was quite barren back then.

I was stationed in Nui Dat from Aug. 67 and I had to go back to Long Bihn overnite because my wife at that time was not getting my checks. While there that night some VC broke the perimeter,if I remeber it right, with satchels on their backs and blew up the Ammo Dump. I'm trying to get VA Benefits and they need a date. I remember it as been in Oct. or Nov. but I could be way off, Since you were there, maybe you can help refresh my memory? Much appreciated, brother. |

| Comments: | I was in Saigon, in July 1970 as a united states navy Seabee working on the fountain in Cholon. We installed colored lights and all sorts of fountain heads to make a wonderful gift to the city from the united states government. It is really a wonderful sight to me to see that the fountain is still in place this many years later. I am now 60years and then I was only 22. You brought a smile to my face when i saw the fountain with the Dragon. |

| Comments: | As I had written you earlier, but letter
unfinished due to space allowance, I loved the country. My first outpost was outside Ton Son Nhut where I was
plugging a hole overrun by VC during Tet, this was August 68, chopper had to bring us in (searchlight crew and
radar) and at night it was pitch black though I was outfront of 105mm arty and 4.2 mortars on a bunker line near
what they called Korean Road. I envied the air force guys as some times I would drive our jeep into the air base
and see air conditioned barracks and showers while we lived in ditches and bunkers loaded with ground water, flies
and rats;it was too much so I stayed away, then I moved to Phu Cuong bridge where I stayed for 8-9 months till I
extended for base camp outside Long Binh-5/2 Artillery (twin 40mm, quad 50 cal, searchlights) near the 199th light
infantry. I was told we were near the outskirts of the ammo dump acting as a buffer.
When I extended for base camp, I was assigned to Headquarters, lived in three different hooches as they moved me
from job to job killing time, became a courier, built a small pool (dug a hole with bulldozer, lined it with rubber
formerly used to land helocopters, got a pump for circulation, but due to it being on the outskirts, ie. perimeter
road where the mobile 155's, dusters, vulcans drove, this "pool" loaded with dust and I was supposed to clean it),
became sargent of guard, also in charge of hooch at rear of compound where rat killers and ladies who washed our
clothes came in. Had three male and one female interpreter under me who would check the men and women coming on
our base. Another duty they gave me was to haul water in tanker to an orphanage which was such a revelation. The
Vietnamese nuns would grab me, take me to a room with cribs full of American/Vietnamese babies who looked like they
were from Kansas, the nuns would say, "Please you take, look just like you, you take." It broke my heart, and I
could foresee the hard times these kids would face after we left, and anything American would be hated.

After 40 years plus I used the VA, after stating I wanted an AO screening. They discovered I had Prostate cancer and I had it radiated away. Vietnam actually saved my live, who would ever know. I also receive a disability and it has allowed me to be able to retire with dignity. Life is funny. I am extremely proud I spent a year in Vietnam with the 543rd Trans. | Comments: | Dear Henry, your Web Site is great. !!!! I do live here in Saigon since 25 years. The last two years I collected a lot of photos of Old Saigon mainly postcards and a french book with litographs but also some from the Internet and your site as well. With these I went to the same locations of today, tried to manage the same view position and I took nowadays photos. These I processed and framed and aranged them stiched side by side old / new as one photo. Up to today I do have already more than 50 pictures which I placed as a album in my Internet Gallery. Click the HP link and the first two position are these pictures. Click on the thumbnail to open the album and there to enlarge the pictures. Please let me know on your impression of this kind of processing.
Best regards from Saigon
Yours

| Comments: | Hi Henry,
I certainly enjoy your website especially the Newport Docks
I was there from 9/67 to 9/68 and worked at Deep Draft 4 at Newport, I also hung around the Galleys waiting for handouts from the cooks on the Merchant ships, you were certainly correct when you said they were great cooks
I was with the 71st Transportation Battalion 551st Company and lived at Camp Camelot and I do not miss the 12 hour days unloading the ships along with the hour drive to and from Newport to Long Binh, especially during the Monsoon, we were soaking cold wet many times before we even began work
My wife and I were host for the 71st Reunion here in Ann Arbor July 2008 and you can see the photos of the fun we had on the Al Furtado's 71st website, nothing like getting together and chewing the fat with some vets
I have talked to several guys who have returned to Nam and they state security won't let you into Newport Docks any longer
I have many times thought about going back but maybe someday

My older brother was on orders, too so he went to Nam and I went to Germany. I always wondered what the place was like (Long Binh) and many of the photos have helped. Great site, great work! | Comments: | I worked at USARV HQ 1966-67, stationed at Tan Son Nhut for ten months and moved to Long Binh for the last 2 months of my tour. I remember being at TSN when the ammo dump at Long Binh was hit in 1967; it was about 9pm and I thought maybe an F4 had gone down, loaded with munitions. I remember being amazed at the fireworks show!
I loved Vietnam and the people. I didn't get to see much of the country while I was there. I wish I could return but probably will not have the chance to do so. Fortunately, I worked with many Vietnamese for several years before I retired from the printing profession.
I have not seen you whole site yet, but have bookmarked it and will drift thru it at my leisure. As they say... "thanks for the memories"!

I was with the 19th D.P.U., which at the time I was there, was on the south side of the base. I sure don't remember any swimming pool in the area, but do remember going out the front gate on tne north end and catching a Lumbretta and going in to Ben Hoa. Even spent a few over-nighters there. I've been trying to find whatever happened to my unit. We were situated right nest to the 56th D.P.U., but I'm sure at sometime or other we were both swallowed up by someone else. Our unit only had 94 men in it, and this included the 4 officers. Our highest ranking officer was a Major. Our work was all classified, and we worked with computers, and they had to be cooled, so we worked out of air conditioned trailers. I think, if memory serves me right, that we had 6 interlocked trailers, but it could have been 8. We went 24 hours a day |

Don't remember the brigade number and I can't figure out where we were exactly on base. Anyway, I went back in 1985 when it was "illegal" to go to VN. Passed by Long Binh then and it was just a barren field with the General Hq buildings in the background. I went back again in 2005 and the place was all built up. Had no idea where anything was. Went to Bien Hoa and the only structure I recalled was the watertown. It was very surreal to me. Actually, kind of sad to think how long along I had been there. Had a fantastic trip though. Spent 7 weeks in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Sailed the Mekong river for eight days, spent time in Phnom Penh, travelled by pickup truck to Laos, flew to Hanoi, took the train to Hue and then had a guide and driver as we crisscossed our way back to Saigon. Was going to go back again this winter and "l |

How are you ? I am accidently stumbling in to your web site a couple of days ago , interestingly I've been looking for the street named Adran for some personel reasons and thank you for your photo postcard I found where it is and what is look like now. For your information Adran now is HO TUNG MAU , that the street starting where Mac Thi Buoi ending , Ho Tung Mau is the street leading from behind Tong Nha Ngan Kho or Kho bac Nha nuoc on Nguyen Hue to the waterfront on Quai de Belgique or Ben Chuong Duong where the Cau Mong to Khanh Hoi is ,you will passed the Old US Embassy on Ham Nghi on the way to the waterfront by this route . Your Adran photo postcard was taken somewheres near old US Embassy on Ham Nghi to Adran street, the building you see on the old postcard is now NHU LAN building , famous for French sandwitches and ask to why this street named was Adran the only explanation is the wooden church ,the first one in Saigon was here before its moved to its present location Sa |

| Comments: | Hello Henry,
Well, I think I've gone through your whole site! Thank you very much for sharing.
As a girl I lived with my family in Quin Yon, Nha Trang and Saigon. We left in 1967 just before Tet. My father worked for RMK, a construction firm you probably recognize. We lived in Vietnam when no one back home had ever heard of it. lol
I'd like to go back and take my kids who are in their 30's. I have friends there in Saigon that I have known for 40 years. They will help me find a place to stay. I'm a teacher who subs for our local schools systems. I have thought about teaching in VN but might be too old! lol Still, your pictures make me "homesick." We lived in Gia Dinh in Saigon the last time. Would love to see if our home is still there. I'm sure I won't be able to recognize a lot. Just your pictures of the market in Saigon looks so small.
Anyway, nice to meet you and let me know if you're going back. :)

I have always wanted to go back, even when I was there, I knew I should return. I loved the people and understood
why they wanted us out and why at various times someone tried to kill me. I go along with the kids, and especially
the families of Vietnames soldiers on the bridge separating phu loi and Cu Chi known as the Phu Cuong Bridge. A book
was written about our experience there called Where the Rivers Run Backwards by William E. Merritt about life from Ft.
Leonard Wood to the explosion which killed and wounded a few of us, I had 18 months to go to get the early out as I
had enlisted for three years in the Artillery and eventually went to 5/2 Arty (automatic weapons self propelled, AKA,
Quads, Dusters, Searchlights). Our main base was at one end of Long Binh, and for part of my tour I was a courier and
would travel to Long Binh to pick up top secret radio traffic and other intelligence. It would take about an hour one
way. When I returned from 2nd Field Force w/ the messages for HQ, 5/2 Arty, we would travel toward a village possibly
known as Tam Hiep, but can't remember too well, and then get off at a dirt road, plain ol' flour like dust for a
couple of miles, then turn toward base camp and along a railroad track for a while, I think, past 197th light infantry,
possibly, finally to the outskirts of a huge ammo dump, I believe, which we guarded w/dusters, quads, vulcans,
searchlights. I would guard the gate (my second year) at the rear of the compound facing the village the name of
which I cannot remember and through which the ratkillers, barbers, washing women and girls, tranlators would go and
I was in charge of keeping an eye on things as guys would try to climb the wire to get to the village for a good time.
One even shot himself when I wouldn't let him climb over the wire by leaning on his m-16 and push/pull the trigger,
never found out what happened to him, at least what I can remember of the incident, and it's like he didn't even
exist, but I knew him pretty well which is why he tried to get by me.

I was a US Marine at the Macv compound during the '68 Tet offensive in the city

Had driven thru the Citadel Gates bringing troopers in from the Air field next to the ARVN Army Comound. Thought it was strange that the white mice aka..... Vietnam Police were not present on the bridge as usual.
Again, many thanks for what you have done. I'm sure many guys appreciate your efforts....Chuck |

Thank you for wonderful pictures and narrative. My wife has been urging me to return, and I think I am going to take her up on this. (I was in-country April 1968-April 1969.) If it's ok, I'd like to post some questions to you about travel logistics.
Thank you for your time.

| Comments: | When I left Long Binh Ammo Depot in July of 1970, I hated to leave the friends I'd made in the year I was there.
I always thought that Viet Nam would be a nice place to live if it were modernized with air-conditioned buildings.
I would like to see how the place looks after all these years, in photos, and films, but I wouldn't travel there.
Thanks for this website, and the memories it gave me. |

| Comments: | To my fellow (and women) comrades-in-arms. If you are reading this, you made it through that horrible war. I congratulate you and offer a belated welcome home.
I can understand that many of you do not have pleasant memories of Viet Nam and it is quite understandable. But there are many people out there who lived in Viet Nam as military, diplomatic, missionary and business dependents who lived, went to school there and loved it and I am one of them.
My dad was stationed in Saigon, Sgt Maj. Of MAAG (1960 or thereabouts) and my mother, sister and I joined him. We lived above the PX and commissary on Phan Dinh Phung street until my dad retired in 1963 and went to work for USOM (today USAID). My family was evacuated in 1965.
I returned to Viet Nam in 1968-1969 as a GI and was stationed at Long Binh with the 12th CAG. Missed Tet by about a week. Again returned to Viet Nam in 1973 while on my way to Phnom Penh for an assignment and was evaluated from there just before the countr |

I am amused to note that your recent photos look almost exactly as i remember Bien Hoa and Long Binh from 1969. We, along with our dusters were caravaned with cobra air support to Camp Thompson, near Long Binh. I left the same way I arrived... Bien Hoa. Thanks for your work.

I very much enjoyed your website again and it motivates me to get off my duff and get my 8mm films of Vietnam (1971-72) onto my YouTube account (TUUTUUTANG0 is my moniker on YouTube.)
I was with the 538th and 48th Transportation Companies in Tanker Valley. We hauled jet fuel, mogas and diesel into the Mekong Delta, the Central Highlands and on a few trips to Vung Tau. I joined the Army out of high school (my story is on my YouTube Bio) and hit Long Bihn at age 19.
I'll contact you once my footage is on YouTube.
Good luck. |

I would like to add that any Vietnam veteran who even is thinking about and can afford the trip back. GO NOW, you aren't getting any younger and it gets rough trying to climb some of those hills and mountains, even now and I'm 59. No, longer 19 year old draftee. Go, you'll never regret it.

| Comments: | Served at TCHill from late 66 to 67 (end of 2 year draftee time). 7th Trans HHD. Clerk; typed convoy manifests from Saigon to destination points.
Would go back under the right circumstances.
Wonder about the route to BienHoa, especially the market place and the river front. Seems there was a town at the turn west to Bien Hoa; can't remember its name.
I left when the big HQ was just being started; the hill had just been cleared and graded. |

| Comments: | Henry, I thoroughly enjoyed browsing your site. I was in Nha Trang from Jun '68 until Nov '69, as a Morse Code Operator with Special Forces at the SFOB. Because SF was 300% overstrenght and MP's critically short, I was reassigned to the 615th MP Co, Long Binh until my extension ended in Jan '70. I have fond memories of my time in Vietnam, love the people and have always had a desire to return! Maybe some day! Take care, SGM T |

| Comments: | Henry,
Thank you for all that you have put together regarding Long Binh, I got my draft notice November, 1968 inducted in KC January 15, 1969. I was in the 20th Preventive Medecine Unit attached to the 9th Lab (?). One of the pictures you have is my computer screen saver. Our hootches are just barely shown in your picture of the 20th Med-Evac hospital. They were located in the far upper right hand edge of the photo.
I have had very little luck in finding any information about the 20th PMU.
Thanks, again.

| Comments: | I was at Long Binh from Jul, 69 thru Dec 70. The last 12 months I was stationed in "Tanker Valley" with the same view of USARV HQs that appeared in some of your pictures. My unit 522nd Med Det, Veterinary HQ. was in the decomissioned First Aid Bldg and across from the Transportation Battalion PX and near the above-ground swimming pool. We had an elevated water tower nest to the back of our bldg.
I would be interested in hearing whether you remember any of this even remotely.
Sincerely,
Tony Anderson |

| Comments: | I went to Long Bien in Nov 1965 and stayed until Aug 1966. My unit was the 557th engineer company. We were one of the first units into Long Bien. We built the 93rd Evac Hospital and started to carve the ammo dump out of what was then just jungle. I can't believe looking at your satilite photo the change in LB from the time I was there. Thanks for bringing me this. |
